Gary J. Bass is the William P. Boswell Professor of World Politics of Peace and War at Princeton University’s Department of Politics. His work focuses on international relations, security, human rights, and justice. He holds an A.B. from Harvard College and a Ph.D. from Harvard University.
His research explores topics such as war crimes tribunals, U.S. foreign policy, and the history of humanitarian intervention. Bass has authored seminal books including Judgment at Tokyo (2023), a finalist for multiple awards, and The Blood Telegram (2013), a Pulitzer Prize finalist. His writing appears in journals like International Security and outlets such as The New York Times and Foreign Affairs.
Bass has received the Arthur Ross Book Award (multiple times), Lionel Gelber Prize, and Cundill Prize. He is also a recipient of Princeton’s President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching and the Stanley Kelley Teaching Prize.
Recent work includes courses on Human Rights and Causes of War, reflecting his engagement with contemporary global issues. His research bridges historical analysis and modern policy debates, emphasizing moral and legal dimensions in international affairs.
