Gary Hoppenstand is a Professor in the Department of English at Michigan State University (MSU), holding dual affiliations with the College of Arts & Letters and the Film Studies program. He currently serves as Secretary for Academic Governance at MSU. His research focuses on genre studies, popular culture, media studies, and narrative forms in literature, film, and television. Hoppenstand has authored/edited 24 books and over 60 scholarly articles, including works for Signet Classics and Penguin Classics.
He has received major awards including the Popular Culture Association’s Best Book Award (1997 & 2007), the PCA Governing Board Award (2008), and MSU’s highest honors: the Paul Varg Alumni Award and William J. Beal Outstanding Faculty Award (both 2008). As a leader in academic associations, he has served as PCA President, series editor for the Greenwood World Encyclopedia of Popular Culture, and editor of The Journal of Popular Culture for 11 years.
His recent projects include writing a cultural history of adventure fiction for the University of Nebraska Press and editing scholarly anthologies. His work bridges literary criticism with pop culture analysis, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to understanding media and narrative forms.
