Gary Beckman is George G. Cameron Professor of Ancient Near Eastern Civilizations at University of Michigan, specializing in Hittite language and history. His research examines Hittite religious practices, social organization, and diplomatic relations.
Current projects focus on cultural exchange between Hittite and Mesopotamian civilizations, particularly evident in the Epic of Gilgamesh tablets from Hattusa. Authored catalogs of Yale University's Old Babylonian tablet collection and numerous articles on Hittite society.
Holds PhD from Yale University (1977). Former chair of Near Eastern Studies department and president of American Oriental Society.
