Gary Austin is a Professor in the Landscape Architecture Program at the University of Idaho's College of Art and Architecture. He holds an MLA from California State University, Pomona, and a Bachelor of Arts in History. His research focuses on constructed wetlands, green infrastructure, urban biodiversity, and low impact development. He has authored two influential books: Constructed Wetlands for Sustainable Development (2016) and Green Infrastructure for Landscape Planning (2014), along with peer-reviewed articles in journals like Landscape Journal and Journal of Green Building.
Professor Austin teaches courses such as LARC 151 (Introduction to Landscape Architecture) and LARC 453/455 (Senior Design Studio). His outreach projects include urban planning initiatives in Idaho towns like Cascade and Priest River, collaborating with architecture and bio-regional planning faculty. He has led the University of Idaho's Landscape Architecture Study Abroad Program in Cremolino, Italy, for over 13 years.
His current research explores cold-climate greenhouses, urban biological diversity, and community agriculture, with projects including book chapters on landscape and food systems and low impact development methodologies. He emphasizes integrating natural and human systems through landscape planning, addressing climate adaptation and sustainable development challenges.
