Garth Funston

Dr. Garth Funston is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Primary Care Cancer Research at the Wolfson Institute of Population Health, Queen Mary University of London. He holds an MB BChir from the Universities of St Andrews and Cambridge, and a PhD in ovarian cancer detection funded by Cancer Research UK. His research focuses on early cancer detection, health inequalities, and cancer survivorship, leveraging large healthcare datasets and clinical trials. He sits on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of General Practice and the NICE Suspected Cancer Quality Standards Update Committee.

Dr. Funston’s research portfolio includes studies funded by the NIHR, Cancer Research UK, and Prostate Cancer Research. His work has addressed biomarker performance (CA125, HE4), diagnostic prediction models, and disparities in cancer outcomes among ethnic groups and migrants. Notable contributions include identifying associations between breast cancer survivorship and mental health outcomes, and evaluating ovarian cancer detection strategies in primary care.
