Gareth Parkes is Subject Area Leader for Forensic & Analytical Sciences and Reader in Analytical Science at the University of Huddersfield's School of Applied Sciences. He leads research in thermal analysis, forensic chemistry, and analytical instrumentation development.
Education includes a Ph.D. in novel thermal analysis techniques from Leeds Metropolitan University and B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of East Anglia.
Research specializes in thermal analysis methods (DSC, thermomicroscopy), pharmaceutical characterization, e-cigarette analysis, and forensic applications. The Thermal Methods Research Unit under his co-direction develops instrumentation linking thermal analysis with mass spectrometry.
Publications demonstrate innovation in analytical techniques for materials characterization, pharmaceutical quality control, and environmental analysis. Recent work focuses on HDM (hot-stage microscopy-DART MS) integration, pyrotechnic safety testing, and anticancer metallodrug evaluation.
Teaches analytical and forensic science, serves as Course Leader for M.Sc. Analytical Science and M.Sc. Forensic Science programs. Professional activities include leadership in the Royal Society of Chemistry Thermal Methods Group.
