Gareth McMurchy is a doctoral researcher at the School of Computing, Newcastle University, affiliated with Open Lab. His work focuses on the intersection of artist-run initiatives, technology, and archiving, employing design-led methodologies and critical/speculative perspectives.
He holds a BSc and MSc in Product Design from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee. His research explores how artist-run initiatives adapt to modern challenges and innovate archiving practices through technology. A recent co-authorship in JMIR (2024) examines mobile apps for food purchase decisions, analyzing design approaches, behavioral impacts, and technical challenges like image recognition and user engagement.
His technical expertise spans data preservation, technology adoption, and sustainable design practices, with a focus on mitigating technological obsolescence. He engages in empirical research and user-centered design for digital interventions.
