Research focuses on 20th-century Irish art music, Anton Webern’s compositional development, serialism’s Irish reception, and German-Irish musical exchanges. He has authored monographs on Seóirse Bodley and Brian Boydell, edited collections on Irish musical analysis, and contributed entries to major references like The New Grove Dictionary of Music and the Encyclopaedia of Music in Ireland.
Publications span over three decades, analyzing works by Irish composers within broader European contexts. Recent focus includes Aloys Fleischmann’s avant-garde works and Fritz Brase’s contributions to Irish musical life. His writing often connects compositional techniques to national identity and cultural history.
Teaching and research emphasize interdisciplinary approaches, linking literary influences (e.g., Goethe’s impact on Webern) to musical structures. He has organized conferences and edited volumes fostering dialogue between Irish and international musicological perspectives.
