Gaochao He is a Visiting Professor at the Program in East Asian Studies at Johns Hopkins University (JHU), affiliated with the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Chicago (1993) and previously served as a Professor of Political Science at Sun Yat-Sen University (2004–2017). His research focuses on social transformation, labor politics, and evolving labor relations in China, particularly the interplay between the state, trade unions, managers, and workers. He has conducted extensive field research and authored manuscripts such as Labor Politics in China: Where the state meets market and society and Voices from Workplace: Workers reaction to the neo-liberal production regime in China. Additionally, he explores documentary photography capturing China’s societal changes.
Prof. He has held visiting roles at Harvard Law School’s Labor and Worklife Program (Visiting Research Fellow, 2016; Senior Research Associate, ongoing) and Southampton Solent University (Senior Research Fellow, 2017). He also taught and conducted research in Germany (2015). His affiliations include the Hopkins-Nanjing Center, Center for Language Education, and the Alexander Grass Humanities Institute at JHU.
