معرفی
Galen Wright is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba, where he also holds a cross-appointment in the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics. He is a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Neurogenomics and a principal investigator in the neuroscience research program at the Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine, Health Sciences Centre.
His educational background includes a PhD in Genetics, a BSc (Honors) in Genetics, and a BSc in Biotechnology, all from Stellenbosch University. He received additional training in computational biology at the South African National Bioinformatics Institute and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of British Columbia.
Dr. Wright's research focuses on understanding the genetic and genomic basis of brain function, particularly DNA repair mechanisms in neural tissues. He employs large-scale genomic data analysis, bioinformatics, machine learning, and functional validation techniques such as CRISPR/Cas9 to identify genetic factors influencing neurological disorders and drug responses. His work aims to improve risk prediction models and identify novel therapeutic targets in neurodegenerative diseases and precision medicine.
Although no specific publications are listed in the provided text, his research themes indicate a strong emphasis on neurogenomics, human genetics, and computational approaches to understanding brain biology and disease.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Neurogenomics (2020–2025)
- Carnegie African Diaspora Fellow (2021)
Dr. Wright is actively involved in mentoring graduate students, accepting both Master's and PhD candidates. His research is supported by federal grants, including CRC funding of $500,000 over five years, enabling wet-lab validation of computational findings and the training of future scientists. He emphasizes open and reproducible science and collaborates closely with experts in neuroscience and genomics, including his partner Dr. Britt Drögemöller, also a Canada Research Chair at the University of Manitoba.
He is based at the Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine, a joint initiative of the Health Sciences Centre Foundation and the University of Manitoba, where his lab integrates computational and experimental approaches to advance neurogenomic research.
