Dr. Gail Schwieterman is an Assistant Professor in the School of Marine Sciences at the University of Maine. Her work focuses on understanding how environmental and human-induced stressors impact fish physiology, with applications to conservation and sustainable resource management. She holds a Ph.D. in Marine Science from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (2020) and a B.A. in Biology from Oberlin College (2012).
Her research integrates multi-level biological approaches to study stress responses in marine organisms, particularly sharks and teleosts. Key themes include thermal acclimation, cardiac function under environmental stress, and nursery habitat dynamics. She teaches courses such as SMS 304 (Integrative Marine Physiology) and SMS 491 (Marine Ecological Physiology).
Her lab’s work emphasizes translational science to inform conservation policies, especially in eurythermal and coastal species. Recent studies address climate change impacts, hypoxia tolerance, and the physiological basis of species resilience. The Schwieterman Lab is based in Orono, Maine, on Penobscot Nation ancestral land.
