Gail McConnell

Professor Gail McConnell serves as a full-time faculty member at the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, University of Strathclyde, where she leads the MRC-supported Strathclyde Mesolab facility. Her position involves active PhD supervision, international collaboration, and development of next-generation optical imaging technologies including the groundbreaking Mesolens system for large-volume biological specimen analysis.

Her research specializes in advancing optical microscopy through linear/nonlinear optics, novel light sources, and specimen preparation techniques. Current work focuses on mesoscopic imaging applications for neuroscience, developmental biology, and congenital abnormality research, with strong interdisciplinary connections to physics, engineering, and computer science. Recent publications demonstrate methodological innovations in fluorescence microscopy optimization and environmental microplastic characterization.

Dr. McConnell's scientific contributions have earned prestigious fellowships including the Institute of Physics and Royal Microscopical Society (both 2024). She actively supervises doctoral students and secures major research funding through 67 projects including active grants on cerebral microvascular modeling (2025-2026) and adaptive optics development, fostering global collaborations through the Mesolab facility.
