Professor Michael MacDonald holds the Chair of Biomedical Photonics at the University of Dundee, with a joint appointment between the Division of Cancer Research (School of Medicine) and the School of Science and Engineering. He leads the Biophotonics Research Group within DIT and co-leads the university-wide Biomedical Photonics and Ultrasound Group (BPUG).
- BSc in Physics from University of Strathclyde (1996)
- MSc (1998) and PhD (2000) in Laser Physics from University of Bern
- Joined Dundee from University of St Andrews in 2007
- Served as Senior Advisor of Studies until May 2022
His research spans:
- Lightsheet fluorescence imaging for developmental physiology (chick embryos) and plant biology
- Label-free cell sorting technologies using optical/acoustic methods
- Opto-acoustic imaging for prostate biopsy and ultrasound array programming
