Gail L. Patricelli is a Professor in the Department of Evolution and Ecology at the University of California, Davis, and Chair of the Animal Behavior Graduate Group. Her research focuses on behavioral ecology, bioacoustics, and conservation, particularly in birds. She holds a PhD in Biology from the University of Maryland and has held academic positions at UC Davis since 2004.
Patricelli’s research explores animal communication, sexual selection, and the impacts of anthropogenic noise on wildlife. Her work combines field studies, robotics, and experimental approaches. Notable projects include studies on greater sage-grouse and satin bowerbirds, examining mating systems, signal evolution, and conservation challenges.
- Educations:
- PhD in Biology, University of Maryland (2002)
- MS in Biology, University of Maryland (2001)
- BA in Biology and Art, Whitman College (1993)
Her teaching spans courses on animal communication, evolutionary biology, and professional development for graduate students. Patricelli has received numerous accolades, including Fellowships from the American Ornithologists’ Society and Animal Behavior Society, and teaching awards from UC Davis. She mentors over 40+ students, fostering both academic excellence and conservation awareness.
Her lab collaborates on initiatives like Project Phoebe, leveraging technology to study complex animal behaviors. Patricelli’s work emphasizes the integration of ecological data to inform conservation strategies, addressing threats like habitat loss and noise pollution.
