Gail B. Werrbach is Associate Professor and Director of the School of Social Work at the University of Maine, where she has taught for over 25 years. Her research focuses on child welfare systems, indigenous social services, and international social work practice, with particular emphasis on community-based care models and policy evaluation.
Key research areas include:
- Native American child welfare services
- Family reunification programs
- International social work education
- Community mental health systems
Werrbach has led four federal grants supporting Native American social work students and co-evaluated the Passamaquoddy Tribe's community-based care system. She currently directs the Global Work with Immigrant Children initiative placing students with international agencies. As commissioner for the Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission, she addresses historical injustices in child welfare systems.
