Gail Archer is a Professor of Professional Practice at Barnard College, Columbia University, and holds affiliations with Columbia's Harriman Institute and Vassar College as college organist. She directs the Barnard-Columbia Chorus and Chamber Choir, specializing in Western classical music and a cappella choral literature. Her work bridges academic teaching, concert organ performance, and advocacy for women in music.
Education: BA (Montclair State University), MA (University of Hartford), MM (Mannes College of Music), DMA (Manhattan School of Music).
Research interests include promoting women organists via Musforum.org, recording Eastern European organ literature (e.g., Ukrainian, Polish), and advocating for cultural preservation through music. Awards include Time-Out New York's 'Best of 2008' for her Messiaen cycle.
Recent achievements include a 2024 European tour (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Norway, etc.), a 2025 Bulgarian organ CD release, and grants from the Harriman Institute and Vassar College for her Eastern European trilogy. She performs globally and publishes on gender equity in classical music.
