Dr Gaetan Burgio is a Group Leader and Head of the Transgenesis Facility at the John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR) at The Australian National University. His research focuses on host-pathogen interactions, antimicrobial resistance, and malaria. He leads the Australian Phenomics Facility's transgenesis core and employs CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing to study bacterial and parasitic pathogens. His academic background includes a medical degree from Paris VII University, a PhD from the Pasteur Institute, and postdoctoral research at Menzies Research Institute and Macquarie University. Key research themes include CRISPR system diversity, host responses to drug-resistant bacteria like Acinetobacter baumannii, and malaria parasite mechanisms. His work is supported by NHMRC and NCRIS grants. He has supervised research students and contributed to over 70 publications on topics ranging from inflammasome biology to RNA modifications.
