Gabriella Kulcsar serves as Director and Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Paleoarchaeology within the Institute of Archaeology at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. With over two decades of experience in the field, she has established herself as a leading expert in Bronze Age archaeology, particularly focusing on the Carpathian Basin region.
Dr. Kulcsar earned her PhD in 2003 from Eötvös Loránd University's Faculty of Humanities, Doctoral School of History, Archaeology Doctoral Program. Prior to this, she completed her archaeologist qualification at the same institution in 1996, with additional studies in cultural anthropology (1991-1993) and Assyriology (1992-1995).
Her research primarily centers on Early and Middle Bronze Age cultures of the Carpathian Basin, with particular expertise in the Makó-Kosihy-Čaka and Somogyvár-Vinkovci cultures. Dr. Kulcsar has conducted extensive fieldwork at significant sites including Ordacsehi-Kis-töltés, Balatonszemes-Bagódomb, and Kakucs-Balla domb. Her methodological approach combines traditional archaeological excavation with environmental analysis to understand settlement patterns and cultural transitions during prehistoric periods.
Analysis of her publication record reveals a consistent focus on Bronze Age settlement patterns across the Carpathian Basin, with particular attention to regional variations in cultural development. Her work demonstrates expertise in both Hungarian and international archaeological contexts, with publications appearing in multiple languages including English, German, and Hungarian.
Dr. Kulcsar has successfully led and participated in numerous research projects funded by prestigious organizations including the Hungarian Scientific Research Fund (OTKA), the MTA Lendület program, and the Wenner-Gren Foundation. Her project leadership includes significant studies such as 'The Early Bronze Age History of Southern Transdanubia' (2007-2010) and 'From Bones, Bronzes, and Settlements to Society: Multidisciplinary Research on Migrations and Social Changes in Bronze Age Hungary' (2015-2020).
As Director of the Department of Paleoarchaeology, Dr. Kulcsar oversees research activities and coordinates excavation projects across multiple sites in Hungary. She has directed rescue excavations along major infrastructure projects including the M7 and M2 motorways, contributing significantly to the preservation of archaeological heritage during modern development.
