Professor Gabriele Gratton is a Professor of Politics and Economics at the UNSW Business School and an ARC Future Fellow. His research focuses on information asymmetries in politics and organizations, democratic institution design, and the impact of media pluralism on governance. He holds a PhD in Economics from Boston University (2011), an MSc from the London School of Economics (2006), and a BA from the University of Rome 'Tor Vergata' (2005).
His research explores how institutions and technologies shape political communication, election outcomes, and policymaking. Key themes include democratic stability, bureaucratic governance, and the role of information in political processes. He has published in top journals like the American Economic Review and Review of Economic Studies.
Gratton leads the Resilient Democracy Lab (RDLab), investigating factors that strengthen democratic systems against economic and social shocks. His work addresses challenges like political polarization, institutional gridlock, and the rise of populism. He has received grants from the Australian Research Council (ARC) and contributes to public discourse through media engagement and podcasts.
His awards include the prestigious ARC Future Fellowship. Teaching responsibilities include courses on political economy, game theory, and advanced microeconomics. He collaborates internationally on topics ranging from Islamic political economy to the design of accountable governance structures.
