Gabriele D'Ottavio

Gabriele D'Ottavio is an Associate Professor of Modern History at the Department of Sociology and Social Research, University of Trento. He holds a PhD in Modern History from the University of Bologna (2009) and a Laurea cum laude in International and Diplomatic Studies from the same institution (2003). His academic career includes roles as a researcher at the Italian-German Historical Institute (FBK) and visiting fellowships at institutions such as the University of Oxford and the Leibniz-Institut für Europäische Geschichte in Mainz.

Research focuses on Twentieth-Century European History, Global and Transnational History, and Visual and Digital History. Key themes include German and Italian political dynamics, European integration, and media's role in shaping historical narratives. His work interrogates the interplay between historiography, politics, and cultural memory, with notable contributions on post-WWII Germany's role in European unification and the media's portrayal of European treaties.

He has received the Ladislao Mittner Prize (2019) and the Lorenzo Riberi Prize (2015) for his book on German-European integration. Teaching includes courses on Global History, Academic Freedom, and Research Methodology. He is a member of editorial boards for journals like Contemporanea and the Annali dell'Istituto storico italo-germanico.

Grants include a DAAD Scholarship (2020/21) and a Starting Grant from the University of Trento (2019). His current research explores audio-visual sources in understanding European integration history. Active in academic networks, he organizes conferences and participates in dialogues on European identity and historical methodologies.
