Dr Gabriele Aroni serves as Senior Lecturer in Game Arts at the School of Digital Arts, Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK. With an international academic career spanning multiple continents, he has previously taught at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou, China, and at Toronto Metropolitan University and OCAD University in Toronto, Canada. His professional background also includes work as an interaction designer at Studio Roosegaarde in The Netherlands.
His academic journey reflects a unique interdisciplinary path:
- PhD research conducted jointly between Toronto Metropolitan University and York University
- MSc in Digital Media from Oxford Brookes University
- Master of Architecture (MArch) from the University of Florence
Dr Aroni's scholarly work occupies a distinctive space at the intersection of architectural theory, digital game studies, cultural heritage, and semiotics. His research examines how virtual architecture functions as both a narrative device and gameplay mechanic in digital games, analyzing the semiotic dimensions of game environments and their relationship to historical and contemporary architectural traditions. He investigates how game spaces communicate meaning to players through architectural signs, influence player behavior through spatial design, and construct cultural narratives through environmental storytelling.
His publication record reveals a clear intellectual trajectory from architectural history toward digital game studies. Early scholarly work focused on architectural orders in Renaissance Florence, applying rigorous morphological and proportional analysis. More recent research analyzes virtual architecture in commercial games like Assassin's Creed II, The Witcher 3, and NaissanceE, developing frameworks for understanding how game environments convey historical, cultural, and narrative information to players. A consistent theme throughout his work is the examination of architecture as a sign system that shapes player experience and understanding.
Dr Aroni's 2022 monograph "The Semiotics of Architecture in Video Games" (Bloomsbury Academic) represents a significant contribution to the field, establishing a theoretical foundation for analyzing architectural representation in games. His research has been published in diverse venues spanning architecture, game studies, semiotics, and law journals, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of his work.
