Gabriela Gomes is a Professor of Mathematics and Statistics in the Faculty of Science at the University of Strathclyde. She previously led research programs at the University of Porto and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and established an independent research group at the Gulbenkian Science Institute. She has held visiting positions in the USA and Brazil and is currently an integrated member of NOVA Centre for Mathematics and Applications and formerly of the Centre for Mathematics at the University of Porto.
Her educational background includes a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Warwick, with a thesis on symmetries in bifurcation theory. She transitioned into mathematical biology through a Wellcome Research Training Fellowship.
Gabriela's research focuses on population dynamics, particularly how individual variation affects outcomes in epidemiology, ecology, demography, and evolutionary biology. She applies mathematical models to study microbial population dynamics, infectious disease spread, vaccine efficacy, and public health policy. Her work emphasizes optimizing study designs and policy decisions through modeling.
The most recent publications show a strong trend in modeling infectious diseases such as Covid-19 and pneumococcal infections, with a focus on herd immunity, heterogeneity in susceptibility, disease forecasting, and statistical analysis of epidemic data. Her work bridges theoretical mathematics with real-world public health applications.
She has received several scientific distinctions:

She is actively involved in PhD supervision and is currently accepting PhD students. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals in health and education.
