Gabriela Alemán

Gabriela Alemán is an Ecuadorian writer and academic holding the rank of Professor at Universidad de San Francisco de Quito. She currently serves as the Richard E. Greenleaf Distinguished Visitor at Tulane University's Stone Center for Latin American Studies during Fall 2023 and Spring 2025. Her academic affiliations include Tulane University (PhD in Film Studies), Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar, and Cambridge University.

Education: PhD in Film Studies from Tulane University (2003), Master's in Latin American Literature from Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar (1996), and a Bachelor's in English Studies from Cambridge University (1991). Professional experience includes roles as Professor at multiple institutions and visiting scholar positions.

Research focuses on Latin American contemporary literature and film, with notable works spanning 9 short story collections, 3 novels, and academic analyses of regional cinema. Awards include the Guggenheim Fellowship (2006) and Premio Joaquín Gallegos Lara (2017). She is a finalist for the Gabriel García Márquez Prize (2015) and part of the Bogotá39 list (2007).

Her recent publications explore narrative techniques and cultural analysis. Grants include National Endowment for the Arts support for translating her novel Humo. She leads the Latin American Writers Series at Tulane and has held residencies like the Kisak Family Foundation (2022).
