Gabriel Singer

Gabriel Singer is a Professor of Ecology at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, holding this position since December 2019. His research spans multiple European river systems with significant collaborations through past affiliations at the University of Vienna and Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) in Berlin.

Professor Singer's research focuses on river network biogeochemistry, particularly carbon cycling dynamics in freshwater ecosystems. His work examines how climate change-induced drying, fragmentation, and human alterations impact greenhouse gas emissions, organic matter processing, and biodiversity. Key study systems include the Vjosa River in Albania (Europe's last wild river) and European intermittent streams, where he investigates microbial reworking of dissolved organic matter, leaf-litter decomposition across aquatic-terrestrial interfaces, and geodiversity controls on algal communities.
