Professor Gabriel Shannon is a Professor in Medicine and Quality and Safety at Charles Sturt University's School of Rural Medicine. He has been practicing as a consultant physician in Orange since 1980, contributing to the establishment of dialysis facilities and diabetic education services in the region. He served as Director of Physician Training at Orange Hospital (2001–2016) and Deputy Head of Sydney University’s School of Rural Health in Orange and Dubbo (established in 2001). He held roles as Senior Staff Specialist at Orange Hospital, inaugural Chair of the Patient Safety and Clinical Quality Committee (Orange Hospital), and Clinical Leader of the Clinical Governance Unit in WNSWLHD (2005). He was a Board Member of the Clinical Excellence Commission and Agency for Clinical Innovation (2008–2016).
