Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theoryمعرفی
Gabriel Busch de Brito is a PhD candidate at the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, within the Department of Multidisciplinary Theory of Law. He concurrently serves as an Associate researcher at the Law and Democracy Nucleus of the Brazilian Center of Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP) in São Paulo, Brazil, a position held since 2017.
His academic background includes a Master of Laws (2018–2021) from Universidade de São Paulo (USP) funded by FAPESP, and a Law degree (2012–2017) from the same institution. Prior research experience includes Assistant researcher roles at CEBRAP (2014–2017).
Busch de Brito's research centers on the Critical Theory of Law, specifically examining the intersection of law, capitalism, and democracy during the Weimar Republic. His doctoral project analyzes the interdisciplinary legal theories developed by Franz Neumann, Ernst Fraenkel, and Otto Kahn-Freund as responses to historical-political experiences of the labor movement. This work bridges legal history, political theory, and critical jurisprudence to recover a theoretical tradition interrupted by Nazism.
- São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) funding for Master's studies
His research is institutionally supported by the Max Planck Institute's Department of Multidisciplinary Theory of Law and sustained through his ongoing affiliation with CEBRAP's Law and Democracy Nucleus. Current work focuses on reconstructing Weimarian legal thought as historical-political self-reflection.
Busch de Brito operates within collaborative frameworks at both the Max Planck Institute's Frankfurt facility and CEBRAP's São Paulo research nucleus, contributing to comparative studies of law's relationship with democratic governance and capitalist structures.
