Dr. Gabrial Anandarajah is an Associate Professor at the University College London (UCL) within the Bartlett School Env, Energy & Resources. His expertise spans energy system modeling, climate policy analysis, and sustainable development, with a focus on both developed and developing economies. He contributes to global energy policy through research projects, publications, and collaborations with institutions like the UN Industrial Development Organization and King’s College London.
- Education
- PhD in Energy Systems Modeling (University College Dublin, 2006)
- MEng in Energy Economics and Planning (Asian Institute of Technology, 2000)
- BSc in Mechanical Engineering (University of Peradeniya, 1996)
Gabrial’s research integrates technical and socio-economic dimensions of energy systems, including multi-criteria analysis, global technology learning, and low-carbon pathways for developing countries. His work addresses urban transport emissions, hydropower resilience under climate change, and rural energy access challenges.
Recent publications highlight applied research in Ethiopia, Colombia, and the Greater Mekong Sub-region, focusing on energy efficiency investments, climate finance barriers, and land suitability for renewable energy crops. These works employ modeling frameworks like MARKAL/TIMES and contribute to SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
- Scientific Awards
- Yoshiro Takasaki Prize (AIT, 2000)
- Channa Lalitha Madumage Prize (University of Peradeniya, 1996)
- L.R.L Prize (University of Peradeniya, 1996)
He supervises PhD and Master’s students at UCL, teaches advanced energy-economic-environmental modeling, and has previously instructed postgraduate courses at the Asian Institute of Technology. Gabrial contributes to policy through reports for organizations like the Committee on Climate Change and the Department of Energy and Climate Change.
As a member of the UCL Energy Institute and IAEE, he collaborates on projects spanning energy system planning, climate damage costs, and sustainable hydrogen development. His work emphasizes justice in low-carbon transitions and the practical implementation of energy efficiency programs in the Global South.
