Prof. dr. G.C. (Gerry) Wakker is a Professor of Ancient Greek Language and Literature at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Arts. He specializes in Ancient Greek linguistics, literature, and discourse analysis, with notable contributions to Hellenistic poetry and syntactic studies. His academic leadership roles include serving as Dean of the Faculty of Arts (2009–2019), Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer (2020–2024), and Director of OIKOS (the national research school in Classical Studies). Wakker's research explores topics such as discourse cohesion, conditional clauses, and the interplay between language and cultural context in ancient texts. He has published extensively on Hellenistic poetry, including works on Callimachus, Aristophanes, and the linguistic structures of ancient Greek.
His affiliations include membership in the Royal Dutch Institute in Rome (KNIR) and peer review committees for the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). His work bridges classical philology with modern linguistic theories, emphasizing functional grammar and textual analysis.
