G. Gabrielle Starr is President of Pomona College and the McConnell Professor of Human Relations, holding a dual professorship in English and Neuroscience. She is a leading figure in neuroaesthetics, integrating cognitive science, neuroscience, and literary studies to explore how humans experience art and nature aesthetically.
Her educational background includes a Ph.D. in English and American Literature and Language from Harvard University, postdoctoral training at Caltech, and degrees from Emory University and the University of St Andrews.
Starr's research focuses on the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying aesthetic experience, particularly in poetry, visual art, and music. She investigates how subjective responses to art are grounded in brain activity, especially in the default mode network, and how literary form and imagery shape emotional and intellectual engagement. Her work bridges the humanities and sciences, advocating for interdisciplinary approaches to literary studies.
Her recent publications reveal a consistent focus on the neuroscience of aesthetic judgment, the universality of taste, and the cognitive dimensions of poetry and narrative. She frequently collaborates with neuroscientists, using fMRI and behavioral experiments to validate literary theories.

Starr has not only advanced her own research but also contributed to shaping interdisciplinary scholarship through editorial and collaborative projects. While her current role as president may limit direct student advising, her past academic roles suggest a strong commitment to mentoring. She has secured major fellowships and grants that support her innovative cross-disciplinary work.
She is affiliated with research networks in cognitive literary studies and neuroaesthetics, often collaborating with scientists at institutions like Caltech and NYU. Her lab-like collaborative model involves teams of psychologists, neuroscientists, and humanists working on shared questions of aesthetic experience.
