Føllesdal Dagfinn

Dagfinn Føllesdal is a distinguished philosopher and academic, holding the C.I. Lewis Professorship at Stanford University since 1976. He previously served as Professor at the University of Oslo from 1967 to 1999. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. from Harvard University (1961) and studies in science/mathematics at Oslo and Göttingen (1950-57). Føllesdal has held visiting professorships at UC Berkeley, Collège de France, École normale supérieure, and other prestigious institutions.

His research focuses on Philosophy of Language, Hermeneutics, and Phenomenology, with significant contributions to symbolic logic and continental philosophy. He has delivered major lectures such as the Wolfson College Lecture at Oxford and the Tanner Lectures in Buenos Aires.

Awarded numerous honors, including the Humboldt Research Prize and Nansen Prize, Føllesdal is a member of multiple academies: Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (President roles), American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Academia Europaea. He has chaired committees for UNESCO and the Norwegian Government and served as editor of The Journal of Symbolic Logic (1970-82).
