Frithjof Lutscher is a Full Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Ottawa, part of the Faculty of Science. He joined the university in 2005 following a PIMS postdoctoral fellowship at the Universities of Alberta and Calgary. His research focuses on applied mathematics and mathematical biology, with expertise in dynamical systems, mathematical modeling, spatial ecology, and biological invasion dynamics. He holds a PhD from the University of Tübingen (2000) and a Dipl. Math. degree.
Education:
- PhD in Mathematics, University of Tübingen, 2000
- Dipl. Math. (Master's equivalent)
Research Interests: Professor Lutscher explores theoretical and applied aspects of dynamical systems, including integrodifference equations, spatial ecology, biological invasions, conservation biology, and climate change impacts. His work bridges mathematical theory with ecological applications, emphasizing predictive modeling for ecological systems.
Publications: His recent work highlights innovations in spatial modeling, including hybrid finite element methods for habitat dynamics and analyses of climate-driven ecological shifts. These studies address critical questions in biodiversity, species range shifts, and invasive species control.
- CAIMS Research Prize (2022)
- NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplement (2016–2018)
- Ontario Early Researcher Award (2007)
Advising & Grants: While no specific advisees are listed, his research group in Applied Mathematics addresses interdisciplinary projects funded by NSERC and other agencies. His work often collaborates with ecologists and conservation scientists.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Applied Mathematics Research Group at the University of Ottawa, focusing on ecological and environmental modeling.
