Dr. Freya Sierhuis is a Senior Lecturer in English and Related Literature at the University of York, with a focus on early modern literature and intellectual history. She holds an Anniversary Research Lecturer title and has held fellowships at institutions including LMU Munich. Her research explores intersections between literature, religion, and politics in 16th-17th century England and the Dutch Republic, with specializations in revenge tragedy, biblical drama, and the cultural history of emotions. She is currently completing a monograph on Fulke Greville and co-editing his works for Oxford University Press.
Education: PhD in Early Modern Literature (European University Institute, Florence, 2009), MA/BA from University of Amsterdam and University of Cambridge.
Research interests include: Calvinist literary culture, Radical Reformation legacy, emotional representations, and friendship dynamics in early modern texts. She advises doctoral students on topics spanning Anglo-Dutch intellectual exchanges and emotion studies.
Grants include a British Academy-funded project on Joost van den Vondel's plays and collaborative work on the 'Short Peace Network.' She has received awards such as the YUSU Excellence Awards for teaching (2019) and prestigious fellowships from Huygens Institute and All Souls College.
Her work bridges literary analysis with interdisciplinary approaches, examining how theological debates shaped Dutch Golden Age literature and how political ideas were expressed through drama and poetry.
