Dr. Freya A. V. St. John is a Reader in Conservation Science at Bangor University's School of Environmental and Natural Sciences. She specializes in interdisciplinary research addressing conservation conflicts, illegal resource use, and human-wellbeing interactions. Her work emphasizes cutting-edge social science methods to study sensitive behaviors, such as rule-breaking in protected areas.
Key affiliations include the Conservation & Restoration of Resilient Ecosystems research theme and Conservation@Bangor. She leads the Place, Environment, and Development Cluster and serves as the Environmental Planning Pathway Link for the ESRC Welsh Graduate School of Social Science.
Research focuses on understanding drivers of illegal activities (e.g., deforestation, wildlife hunting) and developing equitable conservation strategies. She has supervised three PhD students and led grants like the ERC-funded CONHUB project exploring poverty-rule-breaking links.
