Freek Schmidt

Prof. Freek Schmidt is a Full Professor of Architectural History and the Living Environment at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated with the Amsterdam Sustainability Institute. He specializes in the social, cultural, and historical dimensions of architecture, focusing on the built environment's design, use, and transformation in early modern and modern periods. His research integrates insights from art history, urban planning, and heritage studies, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration. Schmidt advises on spatial quality in Amsterdam and MOOI Noord-Holland, and edits the Landscape & Heritage Studies book series (Amsterdam University Press). He actively participates in international networks like the European Architectural History Network (EAHN) and the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH).

Teaching responsibilities include the Master's program in Architectural History, emphasizing the Netherlands' built environment in an international context. He co-develops courses linking architecture, urban planning, and landscape studies with societal relevance. Beyond VU, he collaborates in the Re-scape colloquium and contributes to PhD training programs through the OSK research school.

Research interests span eighteenth-century domestic architecture, colonial urban connections, and adaptive reuse practices. Recent work examines privacy in Amsterdam elite homes and The Hague's colonial architectural ties. His 2016 book Passion and Control: Dutch Architectural Culture of the Eighteenth Century remains influential. Schmidt's work is embedded in CLUE+, VU's interdisciplinary research institute for Culture, Cognition, History, and Heritage.

Recognition includes the Samuel H. Kress Fellowship (2005). He serves on advisory boards like the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds and Raad voor Cultuur, balancing academic leadership with societal engagement. Over 100 publications and editorial roles reflect his commitment to advancing architectural historiography and public discourse.
