Professor Fredrick E. Vars holds the Robert W. Hodgkins Chairholder of Law at the University of Alabama School of Law, where he teaches Property, Decedents’ Estates, and Mental Health Law. A former clerk to federal judges and Yale Law School alumnus, his research bridges empirical legal analysis and mental health policy, with a focus on firearms regulation and wrongful life litigation.

His scholarship includes 15+ articles on firearms suicide prevention, mental health and gun rights, trusts and estates, and legal standards of proof. Professor Vars’ publications span law and economics, behavioral law, and constitutional implications of gun control. He maintains the advocacy website StopGunSuicide.com, which promotes evidence-based interventions for firearm injury reduction.
