Frederick K. Lamb is a Research Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, affiliated with The Grainger College of Engineering and the Department of Physics. He holds the Brand and Monica Fortner Endowed Chair of Theoretical Astrophysics Emeritus and is a core faculty member in the Program in Arms Control and Domestic & International Security (ACDIS). His research spans theoretical astrophysics—focusing on neutron stars, X-ray binaries, and dense matter—and national security, including missile defense, nuclear nonproliferation, and arms control verification. He played a pivotal role in designing NASA’s Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and is a key member of the NICER mission team, which measures neutron star properties. Lamb has also taught over 3,000 students in courses on nuclear weapons and arms control, advocating for policy reforms. His honors include the Bruno Rossi Prize (2022) and the Leo Szilard Award (2005).
Education: B.S. (Physics) from California Institute of Technology (1967), D.Phil. (Theoretical Physics) from Oxford University (1970). Positions: Research Fellow at Magdalen College, Oxford (1970–1972), joined UIUC faculty in 1972. Served as Director of the Center for Theoretical Astrophysics (1999–present). Grants/Awards: Guggenheim Fellow (1985), APS Five Sigma Physicist Award (2021).
Research Focus: Astrophyiscs: Neutron star structure, X-ray pulsars, NICER mission data analysis.
