Freddy Foks is a historian of modern Britain and its empire, currently holding the position of Simon Research Fellow at the University of Manchester. Previously, he was a Junior Research Fellow at King's College, Cambridge (2018–2022) and a Lecturer in Modern British History at Manchester (2021–2022). He earned his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2019.
His research focuses on social anthropology, colonial development, and migration policies. Key works include Participant Observers (2024), which examines British social anthropology's imperial histories, and a new project on citizenship and emigration in the British Empire. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to education and migration.
Notable awards include the Constance Blackwell Prize (2024) for his first monograph and the History of the Human Sciences Early Career Prize (2023). He has held fellowships such as the Jane Eliza Procter Visiting Fellowship at Princeton University (2016).
His publications span articles in History of the Human Sciences, Journal of British Studies, and book reviews in Social History. His research bridges colonial history, anthropology, and migration studies, emphasizing the interplay between policy and empire.
