Freddie Robins is a Professor of Textiles at the Royal College of Art (RCA), teaching across the School of Design and School of Arts & Humanities since 2001. She also serves as the College’s public orator and is a member of the Material Engagements Research Cluster (MERC). Her practice bridges art, design, and craft, challenging perceptions of knitting as a domestic activity.
Education: Graduated from the RCA’s Textiles programme, with prior studies in Constructed Textiles at Middlesex Polytechnic and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education.
Research focuses on knitting’s conceptual potential, subverting gender norms, and the materiality of textiles. Key themes include feminist critique, maternal identity, and digital knitting technology.
Awards include the 2021 a-n Artists Bursaries and shortlisting for Women to Watch (2012). She has exhibited globally, including at the Hepworth Wakefield and Museum of Arts & Design (New York).
Grants: A 2013 Arts Council England grant supported her project Out on a Limb. Collaborations include the Crafts Council and international institutions like Konstfack (Sweden) and Vilnius Academy of the Arts (Lithuania).
Labs/Teams: Active in MERC’s public exhibitions, such as Colour Made Manifest (2024) and proliferating materialities… (2023).
