Fred Smeijers is a Dutch type designer, researcher, and educator serving as a visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague within the Master Type and Media program. He concurrently holds professorships at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig and the University of Reading.
His educational foundation was established at the school of art in Arnhem. Smeijers' research fundamentally explores the intersection of historical type practices and contemporary digital design, with emphasis on typographic authenticity, letterpress influences in digital media, and the materiality of type. His work bridges academic theory and industrial application through distinctive typeface development and corporate typographic systems.
Notable recognitions include:
- Gerrit Noordzij Prize (2001) for outstanding contribution to type design practice and education
- SOTA Typography Award (2016) from the Society of Typographic Aficionados
Smeijers co-founded OurType (2002-2017) as creative director and established Type Tailors (2008) specializing in proprietary type design for global brands. His influential publications include "Counterpunch" (1996/2011) and "Type Now" (2003), examining historical type production methods and contemporary design philosophy.
