Fred M. Taylor served as an Assistant Professor of Political Economy at the University of Michigan's Department of Economics, appointed in 1892. He later became department chair from 1921 to 1924, succeeding Henry Carter Adams. Taylor authored the influential textbook Principles of Economics, which saw nine editions between 1911 and 1925. He retired in 1929. A fellowship, the Fred M. Taylor Fellowship in Economic Theory, bears his name, supporting doctoral students in economic theory broadly interpreted.
His academic contributions span foundational economic theory and education, reflected in his long tenure and textbook legacy. The fellowship he inspired emphasizes theoretical rigor and supports scholars every other year with tuition, health insurance, and a stipend.
