François Sarfati

François Sarfati is a Professor at the Pierre Naville Centre (CPN – Univ. Paris-Saclay, Univ. d'Évry) and serves as Deputy Director of the Sociology and Political Science Graduate School at Université Paris-Saclay. With over fifteen years of academic experience, he has established himself as a leading sociologist specializing in employment and the workplace.

Dr. Sarfati's educational background includes studies in Economics and Sociology at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, followed by continued research at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (Cnam), where he defended his thesis in 2005.

His research primarily focuses on understanding the mechanisms of social vulnerability, particularly examining uncertainty in labor markets and education reforms. Sarfati pioneered the concept of 'victors of uncertainty,' studying individuals who successfully navigate and benefit from uncertain labor market conditions. His work extends to educational policies, particularly 'dropping out' phenomena in higher education and professionalization policies designed to bridge the gap between academia and the workforce. More recently, his research has explored employment contracts, the managerialization of labor law, and remote working arrangements.

As Deputy Director of the Sociology and Political Science Graduate School since 2020, Sarfati oversees an institution with over a thousand students and approximately 220 researchers and PhD students from seven research laboratories. He emphasizes the importance of international collaboration in developing conceptual tools to understand contemporary societal changes.

Dr. Sarfati's scholarly contributions include his notable book 'victors of uncertainty' and the recent co-authored publication 'Gouverner par l'emploi. Une histoire de l'École 42' (April 2022), which examines how contemporary societies are increasingly governed by employment considerations.
