Dr. Franz Kogelmann is an academic coordinator at the Institute of African Studies, University of Bayreuth. He has held roles including Project Coordinator for DAAD-funded university partnerships in Tunisia/Egypt, Volkswagen Foundation project director, and Gerda Henkel Foundation scholar. His work focuses on Islamic law, foundations (waqf), and political Islam in Africa.
Education:
- Magister Artium (1991) in Social Anthropology, Islamic Studies, African Studies from University of Bayreuth
- Doctorate in Islamic Studies (1997), supervised by Prof. Jamil Abun-Nasr at University of Bayreuth
Research Interests:
- Sharia debates and their societal impacts
- Islamic endowments (waqf) in post-colonial states
- Political Islam in Northern Nigeria and North Africa
- Colonial legal systems and their legacies
