معرفی
Franz Brentano (1838–1917) was a German-Austrian philosopher renowned for his contributions to philosophy of mind, ethics, and metaphysics. He served as a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Vienna (1874–1895) and held academic roles such as Privatdozent in Würzburg and Vienna. His academic career was influenced by his Catholic background and later by his marriage, which led to his resignation from the priesthood and academia.
Brentano studied philosophy and theology at Munich, Würzburg, Berlin, and Münster, earning his doctorate in 1862 with a thesis on Aristotle's concept of being. His research focused on intentionality, inner perception, and the classification of mental phenomena, influencing thinkers like Husserl, Freud, and Meinong.
His work emphasized psychology as a science rooted in self-evident mental phenomena. Key ideas include the intentional nature of consciousness and the triad of truth, goodness, and beauty. Though he left academia in 1895, he continued scholarly work in Florence and Zurich, leaving an extensive Nachlass.
