František Tureček is the Klaus and Mary Ann Saegebarth Endowed Professor of Chemistry at the University of Washington's Department of Chemistry within the College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a PhD from Charles University (1977) and has held visiting professorships at institutions including the University of Aarhus, Ecole Polytechnique, and the University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on mass spectrometry, gas-phase ion chemistry, and applications in proteomics, clinical analysis, and newborn screening. He has authored over 440 papers and three books, contributing to patented technologies licensed for $6 million in revenue.
- Education: PhD in Organic Chemistry, Charles University, 1977
Research interests include reactive molecules, nucleobase radicals, peptide cation-radicals, ion-surface interactions, and mass spectrometric instrumentation. His work bridges fundamental chemistry with clinical diagnostics, particularly in rare genetic disease screening.
Awards include the Thomson Medal (2012), John Gustavus Esselen Award (2013), and AAAS Fellowship. He has served on editorial boards of major chemistry journals and delivered keynote lectures globally.
His research group develops novel mass spectrometry techniques and collaborates on interdisciplinary projects. Grants and licensing revenue reflect impactful translational research.
Labs/Teams: Tureček Research Group focuses on biomolecule electronic properties via UV photodissociation and computational modeling. Graduate training emphasizes synthesis, analysis, and professional skills.
