Professor Frank van Oort is a Full Professor of Urban and Regional Economics at the Erasmus School of Economics, Erasmus University Rotterdam. His work focuses on the intersection of economic geography, urban development, and spatial planning, with particular emphasis on agglomeration economies, knowledge production, and metropolitan networks. He actively engages with policymakers and the public through media appearances and lectures.
His research interests span Agglomeration Economies, Urban Economics, Economic Geography, Geography of Knowledge Production, Economic Networks, Knowledge Economy, Urban Networks and Polycentricity, Urban Geography, Spatial Planning, and Welfare Economics. Professor van Oort challenges conventional notions of prosperity, arguing that quality of life encompasses more than just economic wealth, as highlighted in his Rotterdam Lecture 2025 where he discussed how health and happiness contribute to true prosperity.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on broad welfare measurement beyond GDP, regional policy differentiation, urban network structures, and the economic implications of metropolitan governance. His work increasingly addresses how cities and regions can build resilience against shocks like pandemics while pursuing inclusive and sustainable development paths. The research demonstrates sophisticated methodological approaches combining spatial analysis with economic modeling.
