Frank van Harmelen is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam since 2001, where he leads the Knowledge Representation research group. He also holds adjunct professor positions at Wuhan University and Wuhan University of Science and Technology in China.
He earned his PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh, establishing his foundational expertise in the field.
Professor van Harmelen's pioneering work centers on Knowledge Representation and Semantic Web technologies, where he co-designed the OWL knowledge representation language adopted globally by industry leaders including Google, BBC, Amazon, and Uber. His research bridges theoretical AI with practical applications in knowledge engineering and management, driving innovations that enable machines to interpret complex data structures through semantic frameworks.
His distinguished honors include:
