Frank Witlox is a Senior Full Professor of Economic Geography and Head of Department at Ghent University (UGent). He also holds visiting professorships at the University of Tartu (Estonia) and Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (China), and leads the Mobility Lab at UGent.
Education:
- PhD in Urban Planning, Eindhoven University of Technology
- Master’s in Applied Economics, University of Antwerp
- Master’s in Maritime Sciences, University of Antwerp
Research interests:
Mobility studies, smart city research, transport geography, travel behavior analysis, economic geography, city logistics, and locational analysis of corporations. His work spans sustainable mobility, global commodity chains, polycentric urban development, and transport policy.

Affiliations and academic services:
Director of the Doctoral School of Natural Sciences (UGent), Associate Director of the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) Research Network, and Chairman of the Belgium Institute of Transport Organizers (BITO-IBOT). He supervises over 25 PhDs and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Transport Geography and other journals.
