Frank W. Zok is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Materials at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), within the College of Engineering. His research focuses on structural materials, particularly ceramic composites for high-temperature applications in aerospace and energy systems. He holds a Ph.D., M.E.Sc., and B.E.Sc. in Materials from McMaster University and the University of Western Ontario.
Dr. Zok’s work emphasizes experimental, modeling, and simulation approaches to understand material degradation mechanisms, such as oxidation and environmental effects on fiber-reinforced composites. His group develops advanced ceramics for turbine engines and hypersonic vehicles, as well as lightweight cellular structures. Key awards include the Nadai Medal from ASME (2020) and Fellow of the American Ceramic Society.
- Research Themes: High-temperature composites, blast protection systems, lattice structures.
- Recent Projects: Investigating BN interphases in SiC/SiC composites, oxidation resistance in water vapor, and bi-material lattice design.
He advises graduate students and collaborates with industry and academic partners. His lab employs advanced characterization techniques, including confocal microscopy and mechanical testing, to study material behavior under extreme conditions.
