Prof. Dr. Frank Steffen serves as a Professor at the University of Zurich within the Vetsuisse Faculty's Small Animal Department, specifically leading the Section of Neurology/Neurosurgery.
His research centers on diagnosing and treating spinal cord and vertebral disorders in canine patients, with emphasis on surgical interventions for spinal conditions. He has pioneered novel techniques for neural tissue decompression and intervertebral disc space fusion in dogs, and currently directs a pilot study utilizing autologous mesenchymal stem cell injections to regenerate degenerated discs. This work bridges veterinary and human medicine, aiming to develop cross-species treatments for degenerative disc disease through experimental collaboration with sheep model researchers.
