Frank P. K. Hsu

Dr. Frank P. K. Hsu is a distinguished Professor and Denny & Betty Tsai Endowed Chair in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine. He holds joint appointments as Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering. He also serves as the Medical Director of Ambulatory Neurological Surgery Clinics at UCI Medical Center. His expertise spans cerebrovascular, minimally invasive, and open skull base surgery, as well as functional neurosurgery for movement disorders, epilepsy, and pain.

Dr. Hsu's research and clinical interests focus on the biomechanics of cerebral aneurysms, functional neurosurgery, epilepsy, and innovative spinal techniques. He specializes in treating aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, cavernous malformations, and both malignant and benign brain and spine tumors, including pituitary tumors and meningiomas. His work emphasizes minimally invasive and image-guided approaches to improve patient outcomes.

His recent publications demonstrate a strong trend in developing and refining endoscopic surgical tools and techniques for spinal decompression and cervical spine stabilization. These studies highlight his interdisciplinary approach, combining neurosurgical expertise with engineering principles to create novel instruments such as the endoscopic dural retractor and the endoscopic Kerrison rongeur, aimed at achieving maximal neural decompression with minimal structural disruption.

Dr. Hsu has extensive experience in clinical leadership and mentorship, having previously served as Director of Functional, Cerebrovascular, and Skull Base Surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center. His training includes a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and an MD from the University of Maryland, followed by a neurosurgical residency and fellowships in cerebrovascular/skull base surgery at Barrow Neurological Institute and functional/stereotactic surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University. He is actively engaged in advancing neurosurgical practice through innovation, education, and clinical excellence.
